Class Etiquette and Information

The following list has been compiled to ensure your maximum enjoyment and benefit during yoga class. Kindly read and observe the following information and class etiquette guidelines: (This way we can spend the whole class practicing YOGA)

  • Arrival: Plan on being at the studio 10 minutes before class is due to start.

  •  Just like an airplane taking off,  we lock the doors as the class begins.  This enables us to relax about the valuables in the front room, and eliminates the possibility of several false starts to the class. (You are welcome to arrange for a make-up if you miss the plane!)

  • Food: You may bring a water bottle into the studio, but please, no other food or drink.

  • Electronic Devices: Allow yourself and others the gift of 80 phone free minutes.  Please do NOT bring cell phones, or beepers into the studio. Turn cell phone ringers left in lobby off.

  • Attitude: We all have different levels of strength and flexibility.  You are encouraged to accept your abilities and not compare yourself to others, or to your performance yesterday or last week. The reality is that we can only work from where we are today, not from where we think we should be or from where we were last week!

  • Avoid straining in the poses.  Yoga has many health benefits that are lost if you strain.  Remember, "No gain if you strain!"

  • Questions:  Please try to ask questions after class so as allow the class to flow from one posture to the next. The instructor will be attentive to your body language and assist you if you look like you need assistance during the class.

  • Corrections: Occasionally, the instructor will approach you and invite you to try to make an adjustment while in the pose, to make you more comfortable.  This is never meant as a criticism, or an insistence on perfection.  Rather, corrections are given for your benefit.  Sometimes an instructor will ask permission to touch you to show you how to move into a more comfortable position in the pose.  Please use the phrase NO THANK YOU to let the instructor know you do NOT want to be touched.

  • Yoga should not hurt or frustrate!  If at any time during the class you experience pain, discontinue that posture, rest on your mat and rejoin the class with the next posture.  See the instructor after the class for modifications that will tailor the pose for your comfort and specific needs.

  • Clothing should be comfortable, modest and non restrictive; you’ll be more comfortable if you remove watches, and jewelry, especially dangling earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

  • Bare feet will help you avoid slipping and keep you stable

  • Sticky MatPlease bring a sticky mat designed for yogaWe have mats for sale at the studio.

  • Avoid wearing perfume or cologne and strongly scented cosmetics, lotions, and hair products.  It is often distracting to those who may have allergies or are particularly sensitive.

  • Eating:   You will be most comfortable, and receive the most benefit if you allow at least two hours after a meal before coming to class and when practicing Yoga at home.
